CHAPTER 10

The unusual horizon, cast a warm glow over the woods behind the neighborhood as Faith, Eve, and I met with Trinity. The portal crystal was handy to get us around at times. I just wished it didn’t come with a heaping of Caton and Lucinda. Being questioned by the inept duo was a lesson in patience if there ever was one. They wanted to direct everything without any information and without actually doing anything to help.

Trinity’s typical bubbly smile was gone and replaced by a grave expression. I could tell something was seriously wrong before she opened her mouth. “Thank the gods you’re here. You all need to see this.”

My heart quickened with anticipation and worry as Trinity led us deeper into the woods. Soon, we came across a chilling sight—dozens of lifeless bodies scattered among the trees. Glancing over my shoulder, I could almost see the houses in the mundane neighborhood.

The hair on the back of my neck stood on end and shivers traveled down my spine. The air grew heavy with the weight of death, and my instincts screamed that something more malevolent than murder had transpired here. These poor victims had been robbed of so much more than their lives.

“I felt something,” Trinity said, her voice trembling slightly. “It was like a dark tendril of energy, creeping through the woods. I couldn’t ignore it, so I followed it to the houses then decided to call you.”

I nodded, my senses on high alert. “I feel it too,” I replied. “There’s a strong dark presence lingering here.”

Faith grabbed her kubotan and gestured to the surrounding area. “Do you know where they are? I want to track these assholes down something awful.”

“Agreed,” I said and without hesitation followed the gut instinct telling me to open myself even more so I could see. When neither Eve nor Faith made a move to follow the dark energy trail, I led the way as a palpable sense of danger clung to the air. My heart started racing as it took us through suburban streets where families were going about their day, oblivious to the killer amongst them.

We walked until we left the houses and hit strip malls where it stopped in a nearby parking lot. My fists clenched as the tendrils of darkness seemed to fade away into nothingness and frustration took the wheel and made me want to punch someone.

“I don’t feel it anymore. Do you see it still?” Eve asked, her eyes narrowing with suspicion.

I shook my head as Faith scanned our surroundings. “These Milens are brazen. They hit far too close to mundanes for my taste. We need to find out if any of the victims were supernaturals.”

I nodded in agreement. “You’re right. But with everything on our plate, I don’t think we should handle this on our own. This is the perfect situation to call the Shrouded Nation Police Department to help investigate and handle the scene.”

Trinity’s shoulders visibly relaxed, grateful for the support. “I tried to make you proud, Nishi.
